High School Internship Program

Spend part of your summer with us at the Lieutenant Governor’s Office in the State Capitol! This internship is all about giving students a behind-the-scenes look at how state government works while also building real-world skills like research, writing, public speaking, and teamwork.

Interns will bring fresh ideas and perspectives to small office projects, while gaining hands-on experience in leadership and civic engagement.

🗓️ Dates: June 15 – July 16, 2026 (5 weeks)
⏰ Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (in person at the Capitol)
❗ Application Deadline: April 15, 2026, by 11:59 PM

When is the application due?
Applications are due by April 15, 2025.

When does the internship take place?
 The program runs from June 16, 2026 to July 16, 2026. Interns will report Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  

Is the internship paid?
This is an unpaid internship designed to provide valuable hands-on experience and mentorship in public service.  

Will I be interviewed?
Selected applicants will be invited to interview between April 20, 2025 and May 1, 2025.  

When will I be notified of acceptance?
Final selections will be announced by May 10, 2026.  

How competitive is the application process?
A cohort of six students will be selected based on their application materials, recommendations, and interview performance.  

What will I learn during the internship?

Interns will: 

  • Enhance leadership and communication skills. 
  • Learn about the role of the Executive Branch in state government. 
  • Gain professional office and teamwork experience. 

 

Who can apply?

Any high school student who: 

  • Is at least 16 years old by the start of the internship. 
  • Has completed their sophomore year of high school. 
  • Is currently enrolled as a full-time student. 
  • Hawaii residency required.

Can I apply if I live on a neighboring island?
Yes, students from any island are welcome to apply, but must provide their own housing and transportation during the internship period.  

Is parking provided or validated?
Parking is not provided or validated. Students who plan to drive to the Capitol area will need to pay for their own parking. We encourage interns to use TheBus or other public transportation for a more affordable option.
