HONOLULU — During the press conference of the signing of Senate Bill 1, Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke made the following remarks:

“Today is about courage. It’s about courage of legislators, about doctors, about women’s advocacy groups who stood up and said, ‘No, we are going to continue to protect women’s right to choose and we are going to continue to protect reproductive freedom.’

Hawaiʻi was the first state to allow for abortion. Today, with the signing of this bill, we are sending a message that we will continue to honor that choice, honor women, and honor reproductive freedom.”
