It was an honor to meet with NEA Today President Becky Pringle during her visit to Hawaiʻi. Together with leaders from Hawaii State Teachers Association we discussed our DOE’s work to stand up a temporary campus for King Kamehameha III Elementary following the Maui wildfires—and the ongoing challenges our teachers and communities continue to face.

I also shared the work our state is doing to expand early learning through our Ready Keiki initiative. Mahalo to President Pringle and our very own HSTA leaders for all that you do!

I had the chance to speak at the 3rd Annual Middle Level Student Leadership Summit, which brought together hundreds of 6th–8th grade student leaders from public schools across our state.

It was inspiring to see a room full of young leaders stepping forward and using their voices to create positive change within their school communities. Mahalo to Hawai'i Public Schools and the Duke Kahanamoku Foundation for continuing to support this summit and for believing in our students.

Coach Laura Beeman led our UH Rainbow Wahine Basketball team for an incredible 14 seasons. I’ve gotten to know Coach over the years, and what has always stood out most is her heart—the way she shows up for her team and our community with so much love and compassion.

Coach, the impact you’ve made on our state is truly special. You built a program rooted in sisterhood, strength, and pride. Wishing you the best in your retirement. You’ll be missed, but the legacy you leave behind in your players, your program, and all of Hawaiʻi will carry on for generations. 💚

With last month as Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i and this month being Women’s History Month, I knew I wanted to chat with my friend Pelehonuamea Harman, Director of Native Hawaiian Engagement at @uhhilo and great-granddaughter to the late Mary Kawena Pukui.

A Hawaiian scholar, author, hula practitioner, and educator, Mary’s legacy has been invaluable to the preservation and perpetuation of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian culture. Through her deep connection to hula as a living expression of ʻike and storytelling, she helped carry forward traditions that continue to shape how we understand and practice culture today. She believed deeply that “knowledge is life,” and dedicated herself to uplifting the lessons of her ancestors, producing an astonishing 52 published works on Hawaiian language and culture.

Mahalo, Pele, for sharing reflections about your “Puna”—a shortened nickname for “kupuna.” Through your stories, we’re reminded that knowledge is meant to be lived, shared, and passed on. We see her legacy not only in books, but in language, in practice, and in every generation she continues to inspire.
