Lt. Governor Sylvia Luke Hosts First Capitol Food Drive Fest

The Food Drive Fest raised canned foods and donations to benefit the Hawaiʻi Foodbank’s State Employees’ Food Drive.

HONOLULU, HI – As co-chair of the Annual State Employees’ Food Drive, Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke welcomed all state employees and the public to her office for the inaugural Food Drive Fest, which took place on April 13th and 14th. The community event was held to support the Hawaiʻi Foodbank and featured local vendors and small businesses.

“Hawaiʻi has the 2nd highest rate of child food insecurity in the nation, with an estimated 1 in 4 keiki who will experience food insecurity this year,” said Lt. Governor Luke. “As the largest coalition of the Hawaiʻi Foodbank, our state employees have a tremendous opportunity to give back to our community and play a part in reducing food insecurity in our state.”

The event was attended by members of the public, state employees, and leaders in the Legislature.

“I am so grateful to Lieutenant Governor Luke and her staff for organizing the inaugural State Employees’ Food Drive festival on the fifth floor of the Capitol,” said Senate Vice President Michelle Kidani. “It was a wonderful opportunity to donate non-perishable food products and raise well-needed funds for the Hawaiʻi Food Bank, as well as to meet local vendors and purchase delicious food. It was such a fantastic first event and one that I hope we can continue to celebrate at our State Capitol.”

The inaugural event raised over $1,300 and 1,135 pounds of food, in addition to online monetary donations made directly to the Hawaiʻi Foodbank.
