HONOLULU — Acting Governor Shan Tsutsui has released $1,870,000 in capital improvement project funds for Kaiser High School’s girls’ athletic locker room. It will ensure that the locker room complies with the federal gender equity requirements to provide equitable athletic facilities for boys and girls sports. The additional funding for the project will provide athletic locker and shower facilities for female athletes. Currently, the school only has a physical education locker room for female students.
“It’s been more than four decades since Title IX, also known as the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, became law in the United States, creating gender equality for our female students in all educational aspects, including science, math, band, and athletics. This project is long overdue, and it’s time we provide facilities for our female athletes that give them the equal respect as their male counterparts,” said Tsutsui.
The total cost for the entire project is $7.2 million. Construction is expected to begin in May 2015 and be completed in December 2016.
