Homelessness Decreases in Hawaiʻi

The Lt. Governor joined Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell at a press conference in announcing the most recent Point in Time count for homeless individuals throughout Hawaiʻi.  This year marked the second consecutive year where the homeless count has decreased in Hawaiʻi, 10% statewide, and the first decrease for the island of Oahu since 2009, 9.4%.  The Administration is on track to produce 10,000 housing units statewide by the year 2020.

Mayor Caldwell also announced the City’s purchase of an 8-story, 33-unit building in Waikiki to provide affordable housing, which will also house offices to provide services to low- and moderate-income households.  The State and the City continue to work collaboratively to tackle the housing program throughout Honolulu.
