PEARL CITY — Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui visited Highlands Intermediate School’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program and presented the club with funds from his after-school initiative, R.E.A.C.H. (Resources for Enrichment, Athletics, Culture and Health), which provides an organizational framework for public middle and intermediate schools to offer expanded learning opportunities during after-school hours. The money will go towards purchasing materials and equipment for the program.
Highlands has been recognized as a STEM School by the State. Students have participated in the World VEX Competition, International MATE ROV Competition, National Science Olympiad, National SeaPerch Challenge, Junior Engineering Expo, and State MathCounts. The Science and STEM program is run by science teacher Kathy Lin. The school’s principal is Amy Martinson.
